As you probably heard, WhatsApp Messenger was sold to Facebook for 19 Billion dollars, according to CNN.

WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS.

*Update: TechCrunch’s Ryan Lawler says before the FB deal, WhatsApp raised two additional round of funding led by Sequoia Capital that were never reported, including a $50 million Series S round. Lawler estimates that Sequoia’s ownership of WhatsApp is in the “teens.” This was in addition to the 8M they received in 2011.

Why is it worth 19 billion?

From CNN:

“WhatsApp managed to attract far more users in its first four years than its competition was able to over the same time period.

Growing faster than other social networks: Four years in, Facebook had just 145 million users. Google’s (GOOG, Fortune 500) Gmail had 123 million. Twitter (TWTR) had 54 million. And Skype — now owned by Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) — had 52 million users, according to Heather Bellini, software analyst at Goldman Sachs.

WhatsApp may be “cheaper” than most rivals: Facebook paid just $30 per Instagram user at the time (the service had 33 million users when Facebook bought it, compared to 150 million today). Facebook is spending $42 per WhatsApp user.

But given WhatsApp’s enormous user base, its purchase price might be a bargain compared some of its competitors. LinkedIn’s (LNKD) share price values that professional social network at $153 per user. Twitter trades at $140 per user, and Facebook is at $123. Even at its latest $2 billion valuation, Snapchat trades at $50 per user. (And Snapchat reportedly turned down a $3 billion offer from Facebook last year.)

How WhatsApp makes money:

WhatsApp is also growing at a blinding speed, adding 1 million new users per day. At that rate, WhatsApp should hit 1 billion users sometime next year. With its $1 annual subscription fee, 1 billion users would translate into significant revenue for Facebook.”

According to appfigures, MRNJ apps have had 3.4+ Million App Downloads to-date, 2.9+ Million App Updates to-date, so its seems many of our users tend to update our apps and use them on a regular basis. We estimate several hundred thousand are daily users.

We are averaging about 2500 new users a day for our apps, and expect that to increase over time. According to Flurry Analytics, overall app use in 2013 posted 115% year-over-year growth, we have estimated usage of our apps to be higher than industry average. Our apps tend be used over and over again because their “sticky” content.

WhatsUp app has about 122K 4.5 star reviews…our top mega app Relax has over 2.1k 4 star reviews, and usually reviews are another good metric for amount of active users.

We are about 60% done developing our own messaging app coming out code named “Blink” and it will be different than What’s up App in a number of ways, especially when it comes to security and privacy.

Because of Auto-Post and Push Technology that allows us to reach out to our large customer base directly…we expect to be able to market Blink in a way that will generated thousands and eventually millions of users.

“In November 2013, Benedict Evans, a well-respected and widely followed analyst, shared an updated version of his famous slide deck called “Mobile is Eating the World”. This deck quickly made the rounds on social media and was highly referenced by industry and financial analysts who cover mobile. We can’t help but agree with Benedict’s conclusion. For the past five years, we have watched mobile disrupt every industry, in every country, and continue to break its own records year after year. 2013 did not disappoint.

According to Flurry Analytics, overall app use in 2013 posted 115% year-over-year growth.
